Stress  Relievers

The Baltimore Orioles are celebrating their 60th Year Anniversary this season. If there's been one constant throughout this rich franchise, it's the flare for the dramatics at the closer position. Decade after decade there's a handful of closers that keep you on the edge. Whether they convert the save, or not, it's never easy, and it may not be pretty. Even some of the "great" single-season closers of the franchise have sent fans to the emergency room. I realize not every team has/had that one consistent closer they can rely upon in the call of duty season after season, but Orioles closers have been notorious for keeping it too close for comfort, especially recently. Some of those "stress" relievers are at the top of the list in single-season saves, but their numbers make you wonder how they got the job done.  Here are just SOME of the single-save leaders..........We want to know your thoughts or memories of the past Orioles closers.

Do you follow the NFL Draft process? Of course you do.  Maybe you study film, analyze value rankings and research when players will come off the board. Whether you fly to Indy for the combine, or just rely on your gut, chances are you're making a mock draft. ESPN's draft guru went to Calvert Hall and Towson, so this area is rich in draft wisdom. Are you the next Mel Kiper Jr.? There's only one way to find out...

Everybody Hates Adam

Last night at the O's game, Chen put together a wonderful start, the bats were ignited and the team mashed out a victory over Tampa Bay. In the bottom of the first inning, the fans sitting behind Calum and myself were venting their frustrations. "F***ing Jones swings at everything. Oh wow, he took a pitch. That must be a record for him!" They went back and forth for every at bat the All-Star had that night. Calling Jones a "free-swinger" is certainly a fair claim. It doesn't take Bill James' statistics to show everyone what they already see; Jones takes a very aggressive approach at the plate. What bothered us about these remarks, was that it seemed like the negative attention was focused solely on AJ. On a roster filled with "free-swingers", it would only be fair to make the same assertions for each of the offenders.

Many of the game's top hitters, including Miguel Cabrera, Josh Hamilton and Joey Votto, swing early and often. Jones certainly fits into that category. More often than not, the O's center fielder is looking to attack the first pitch. He finished 2013 with excellent offensive numbers across the board.

However, the negative comments were directed towards Adam Jones all night long. Were they forgetting that he's been one of the top producers in the American League the last few seasons? Did their claims hold water? Were there other factors in play here? Being the research nerd that I am, I took it upon myself to check some stats.
